Project 1 Overview
Nature-based solution
The first project for NZ Forest Restoration is a nature-based solution designed and developed for the New Zealand environment.
The project takes existing exotic plantation forests – previously destined for clearcut logging – and manages them over time to become permanent, biodiversity-rich, indigenous forests.
100% of the project’s units are generated from carbon removed from the atmosphere.
The first of its kind in New Zealand to achieve the Verra Verified Carbon Standard. Designed to be consistent with the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) Core Carbon Principles

How it Works
Each forest is carefully managed, using a comprehensive, long-term plan designed for its specific environment.
Faster, more effective
Managed restoration enables the permanent exotic forest to store carbon more rapidly and effectively over 50+ years.
- Regularly verified by ground truthing
- Audited to international standards
- Establishing the right conditions for biodiverse, indigenous forest restoration
- Continuing to sequester carbon over the long term.
Careful, conservative approach
The project takes a well-researched, measured approach:
- Traditional New Zealand plantation forestry project baseline
- Consistent with New Zealand’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) framework
- No voluntary units earned until carbon storage exceeds the average carbon stock of the clearcut rotational harvest baseline
- Removal units reflect the annual increase in carbon storage
- No claim of any historical reduced carbon emissions.

Project features
Verified
– the project is certified under the Verra IFM Logged To Protected Forest method, VM0012. This method is CORSIA compliant and consistent with the Core Carbon Principles established by the Integrity Council for The Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).
Removals only
– the project only creates units from additional sequestration over the baseline. No reductions or avoidances are involved in the new sequestration measured each year. This carbon income creates the incentive for the ongoing protection and management of the project. This year-on-year carbon income creates and maintains an incentive for ongoing protection and management of the project.
Biodiversity enhancement
– by restoring the land to its natural state, this project will create significant biodiversity additionality, with a far greater impact than the protection of an established native environment
Permanent protection
– a long-term conservation covenant, established under the New Zealand legal system – recognised internationally for its integrity – will protect the project for the length of the crediting period.
Protecting surrounding indigenous forests
– native areas within the same forests are also included within the conservation covenant, ensuring they are also protected for the length of the crediting period. These areas are protected as an important part of the restoration process, providing access to additional native seed sources.
Credible baseline
– the project is designed around established plantation forest practices, which have clear baselines, aligning to New Zealand’s national carbon accounting framework.
No double counting
– only voluntary units, reflecting the annual increase in carbon storage above the baseline – will be claimed on the project. The ensures verified sequestration for offsetting is used only once.
Quality project management
– the project operator is a leading local organisation, with extensive experience in the restoration of indigenous forests.
